Preschool Preschool students are participating in singing games and movement
activities. Our songs have actions that correspond to the words we are singing. We are also learning how to move
our bodies to rhythms of varying lengths.
Kindergarten Kindergarten students are continuing to play singing
games to help us develop pitch matching. Every week, we learn a new song for a letter of the alphabet. We are
almost finished with the alphabet! We are also learning how to sing, play, and move to walk notes (quarter notes), running
notes (eighth notes), and shh (rests). Kindergarten students have used a variety of instruments so far this year.
When we use boomwhackers, we have to watch for the correct color. When we use the malleted instruments (xylophones and
metallophones), we are keeping a steady beat to accompany our singing. We also use a number of other instruments like
tambourines, rhythm sticks, triangles, and drums to keep a steady beat and accompany our singing.
1st and 2nd graders continue to play singing games to reinforce
pitch matching. We have learned about the string family, got to see a real violin, and listened to a lot of types of
string music. 1st and 2nd graders at Sacred Heart are finishing their preparations for their program, which includes
singing and playing boomwhackers. While they are on the boomwhackers, they have been working very hard to watch for
their turn to play and to perform the rhythms correctly. 1st and 2nd graders at Blessed Sacrament have just finished
composing small pentatonic songs using the rhythm of their names. They will begin learning how to accompany stories
with instrument sound effects.

3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Blessed Sacrament
are doing various forms of composition. The 3rd graders wrote words using the musical alphabet and played them on malleted
instruments. The 4th graders wrote "All About Me" compositions, also using the musical alphabet. The
5th graders wrote rhythm resolutions that were the basis for pentatonic compositions. They have reviewed instruments
in the orchestra using a mystery story composition. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Sacred Heart are finishing preparations
for their program, which involves singing and playing boomwhackers. They were able to apply their new knowledge of the
notes on the staff to reading music for the boomwhackers.
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade All middle school students
are learning warm-ups for their voices, especially ones using solfege. We have learned all of the syllables and handsigns
and are now working on putting them together with different melodies. We are also learning how to use breath control
while singing.
Middle school students at Sacred Heart and 6th graders at Blessed Sacrament
are working on compositions. They have been writing a melody line and are finishing their accompanying percussion line.
They will get the opportunity to perform their composition to practice reading notes and rhythms. 7th
and 8th graders at Blessed Sacrament are about to begin their preparations for their Spring musical: Godspell! Soon,
they will receive their parts, and rehearsals will begin!
